Why your records need this
SI 2026/571 reduced the Housing Health and Safety Rating System from 29 hazards to 21 and replaced the old A to J bands with High, Medium and Low ratings from 23 June 2026. If your self-assessment records still reference 29 hazards or letter bands, they will not match what a council inspector expects to see. Where a council takes enforcement action over a High-rated (formerly Category 1) hazard, it can also impose a financial penalty of up to £7,000 under section 6A of the Housing Act 2004.
