Ellon is a market town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, administered by Aberdeenshire Council, situated approximately 15 miles north of Aberdeen city centre on the River Ythan in the Formartine area of Aberdeenshire. Ellon experienced significant growth during the North Sea oil and gas boom of the 1970s-2010s as a preferred residential location for oil industry workers employed at the Aberdeen harbour/heliports and offshore installations — the town's population grew substantially as oilfield workers sought suburban and semi-rural living within commuting distance of Aberdeen. The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR/Balmedie-Tipperty bypass, opened 2018) improved road access to Aberdeen and to the north.
