Historically, Ilkeston was one of the most significant lace-making towns in the world — alongside Nottingham and Long Eaton, it formed the core of the East Midlands lace-making industry that dominated global production in the nineteenth century. The Ilkeston Canal (part of the Nottingham Canal system, now partially restored) and the former Ilkeston Market Place (granted a market charter in 1251) reflect the town's long commercial heritage. Today, the town's economy is driven by: proximity to the manufacturing, logistics, and distribution sectors concentrated on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border corridor; Erewash Borough Council employees; healthcare (Ilkeston Community Hospital; the Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust; the nearest district general hospitals are the Royal Derby Hospital ~8 miles and Queen's Medical Centre Nottingham ~9 miles); and commuters to both Derby and Nottingham. The A6096 and A609 provide direct road access to both city centres; the Ilkeston railway station (reopened 2017 on the Erewash Valley Line) provides direct rail services to Nottingham (~25 min) and Sheffield (~1h).
