March rental market, what landlords need to know
March is a market town in Fenland District, Cambridgeshire, situated on the River Nene approximately 20 miles west of Peterborough, 15 miles north-west of Ely, 25 miles north-east of Huntingdon, and 90 miles north of London. With a population of approximately 20,000, March is the second largest town in Fenland District (after Wisbech) and the main railway junction town on the March–Peterborough and March–Ely lines. March has been an important Fenland market and railway town since the mid-19th century — it grew substantially around the Great Eastern Railway marshalling yards, which were at one time among the largest in England, and the town's character still reflects its railway heritage. March is notable as one of the most affordable rental markets in Cambridgeshire — rents are significantly below the Cambridge, Peterborough, and Huntingdon averages, making it attractive to value-seeking renters who commute by car or train to Peterborough, Ely (and onward to Cambridge), or King's Lynn. Key employers: Fenland District Council (council offices in March; the council moved its headquarters from Wisbech to March); healthcare (North Cambridgeshire Hospital in March — a community hospital under North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust; Peterborough City Hospital ~20 miles west — a major regional hospital with ~4,000+ staff); agriculture and agri-business (Fenland is one of England's most productive agricultural areas; March is surrounded by intensive arable farming and market gardening with associated food processing, packing, and distribution employers); Larkfleet Homes and other housebuilders (the Fenland area has seen significant planned housing growth in March and surrounding villages; construction-related employment); Royal Mail Group (mail processing and distribution — March has been a significant mail distribution centre). Rail: March railway station (East Midlands Railway/Greater Anglia — Peterborough ~20 min; Ely ~30 min; Cambridge via Ely ~50 min; King's Lynn ~50 min via Ely; no direct service to London). Road: the A141 links March north to Wisbech (~12 miles) and south to Huntingdon (~25 miles) via the A14; the A47 is accessible ~10 miles north at Wisbech. Average rents for a 2-bed are £650–£825 pcm.
